I started my concealed carry journey in April 2009 the week I turned 21, I took my first CCW class and found it terribly lacking. After trying to teach myself through trial and error and the available media at the time I took my first defensive carbine course in September 2011.
In March 2012 I was attacked by a vicious dog and while I survived the encounter my performance was sub optimal and I knew that I needed to do better which started a training journey that continues to this day.
From March 2012 to March 2018 I attended 8 defensive handgun courses with Suarez International.
During that time I had to attend 2 concealed carry renewal courses to maintain my Carry Permit.
I noticed that there was a stark difference between defensive handgun courses that were designed to build your skills and the state mandated handgun safety courses and it was shocking.
The concealed carry courses came off as performative, it seemed like everyone involved was there to either check a state mandated box or get paid to check that box there was no hands on training at all and I found this troubling.
After years of teaching friends what I had learned and getting the opportunity to assist another local instructor I finally decided to get certified in 2023 with the goal of building a concealed carry course that married the skill development mindset of a defensive Pistol course with the use of force legal education of a concealed carry course and that was when I founded Cenla Self Defense Concepts.
